M42 is located in the constellation of Orion in the
collection of stars commonly referred to as the great hunter's sword. This large
diffuse nebula spans more that a degree; twice as big as the full moon! M42,
believed to be about 1400 light years away, is the birthplace of stars, a
collection of gas and dust glowing from ionization from the radiation of
nearby stars.
