M46 as imaged by Don Brown of Utah Skies This interesting open cluster can be found in northern Puppis, about 13 degrees west of Sirius and nearly 20 degrees south of Procyon.  It is estimated that M46 consists of nearly 500 stars that are about 300 miliion years old.  Apparently within the cluster, but most likely in the foreground, can be seen NGC2438, a small mag 10.1 planetary nebula.
