Checkout this cool shot taken by Richard Marisa of Ithaca, NY on Valentine's Day .  The Moon is obvious in this shot... as is the planet Jupiter just below it. Notice the cool Moon Halo surrounding the two. This effect is caused by Ice Crystals in the upper atmosphere.

This is a great example of something you can see just by stepping outside your house after dark. No special equipment is needed whatsoever.
